21st November 2018, Brooklyn, New York — In honor of International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on February 21, 2019 – Smart Coos is launching a 90-day IMLD campaign. The campaign is geared toward encouraging, supporting and spreading bilingualism and multilingualism throughout the world by both recognizing heritage speakers and embracing new language learners.
IMLD is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism. First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
Throughout the month, Smart Coos will highlight and celebrate bilingual and multilingual children throughout the world. Naya Desir-Johnson, who speaks six languages and is the daughter of Smart Coos CEO Mirta Desir, is the face of the multilingual campaign – and will highlight the bilingual and multilingual children and language teachers that make a difference in the world.
Smart Coos CEO Mirta Desir, who came up with the concept of Smart Coos because of her experience as a child immigrant to the United States from Haiti and because of the difficulty she faced trying to raise Naya to be multilingual in the United States, will also highlight the parents who are committed to raising bilingual and multilingual children in the United States.
The campaign is encouraging bilingual or multilingual children to highlight their language superpower by using the following hashtags — #IMLD #MyLanguageSuperPower #WhatsYourSuperPower . Understanding the critical role of parents – parents are encouraged to share why they are or want to raise multilingual children with the use of the following hashtags — #IMLD #MyKidsLanguageSuperPower.
