For a very long time, it was thought that knowing more than one language would actually hinder your learning by slowing down your learning and confusing you. However, now that extensive research has been conducted in the field of language acquisition and development, it is clear that being bilingual is an advantage. According to a BBC investigation into the benefits of bilingualism, the brain power you use to speak more than one language is like exercise for your brain. Similar to exercising your muscles, it’s good to stimulate pathways in your brain regularly to heighten your cognitive abilities. In the long run, being multilingual improves cognitive performance so much that it can help fight off mental diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, and it can even delay the on-set of dementia by five years (as stated in a TEDxtalk by Mia Nacamulli and a BBC article by David Robson). All in all, multilingualism has been proven to be cognitively beneficial, soundly disproving the long-held belief that multilingualism hinders cognitive development.
