Global Citizen Festival

Global Citizen-S.C

New York, New York and New Orleans, Louisiana– September 21, 2016 – The annual Global Citizen Festival is just around the corner and this year is sure to be better than ever. If you are unfamiliar with Global Citizen, they are an Australian-born initiative that was created to counteract extreme poverty around the world. With their online and mobile platform, Global Citizen encourages people to take activist action by allowing them to accumulate point for the actions they take to stop extreme poverty and then letting them redeem those points for prizes, such as concert tickets to the Global Citizen Festival or other big concerts and events. Since their launch in 2012 with the very first Global Citizen Festival, more than 7 million actions have been taken to stop extreme poverty.

This year, Global Citizen has used its innovative platform to impact a projected 600 million lives worldwide and, to celebrate, they’re rewarding their hard-working activist users with a huge concert in Central Park. The festival lineup will include an array of well-known musicians such as: Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Selena Gomez and even rock legend, Metallica. And if you think the concert lineup is good, the concert hosts are equally as impressive. Chelsea Handler, Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris are only some of the incredible guests and hosts that will appear at this year’s Festival.

Although Smart Coos will not be a part of this extraordinary event, we admire Global Citizen’s progress toward their goal of eliminating extreme poverty and share in their passion for helping disadvantaged individuals in our world. On September 24, 2016, when the Global Citizen Festival finally comes around, it will be a celebration of both music and the incredible knowledge that we are one step closer to eliminating extreme poverty around the world.

Fish With a Man and Smart Coos Team Up to Close the Educational Gap and Support Homeless Youths

GoFundMe- Fish With a Man & Smart Coos

West Palm Beach, Florida  and New Orleans, Louisiana– May 24, 2016Fish With a Man and Smart Coos are partnering up to provide 200 homeless children in Palm Beach County with education, and other support, for an entire year. In addition, the money will go towards funding an all day event (from 11:00 am-7:00 pm) on November 20 for homeless children and children at risk for being homeless. Smart Coos and Fish with a Man will provide three workshops where the 200 at risk children can gain the knowledge and resources they need most, and they will also provide all the workshop participants with a full lunch and dinner. The partnership has created a GoFundMe page in order to raise $150K by November 20, 2016 in honor of “National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.”

Palm Beach County is ranked second for “children living in spaces not designed for human habitation.” 3,170 student-aged kids were declared homeless in 2016 and the average age of those homeless children is only 7 years old. The need for some form of intervention is definitely needed and through this partnership Smart Coos and Fish With a Man intend to make a positive impact in the community.

Fish with a Man was founded by Randal Johnson in order to support homeless youth on their path to becoming self-reliant. Johnson says that, ““Fish With a Man is uniquely suited to help homeless youths tackle the issues that arise from homeless. With the funds, if our two organizations can significantly impact the life of 1 child out of 200 over the course of 1 year — that is a success.” The organization is bringing their passion and  experience with the homeless population in Palm Beach County to the partnership.

Smart Coos, founded by Mirta Desir, is a language learning EdTech company that strives to empower and educate others through language learning. Desir reflects on a campaign Smart Coos launched to provide at risk children with the opportunity to learn a second language by stating; “A few months ago when we launched “Learn a Language, Share a Language” – the goal was to impact children in need – Fish With a Man’s narrow focus on homeless youths ensures that Smart Coos lives its social impact goals every day.” In conjunction with Fish with a Man, Smart Coos is contributing their EdTech expertise to this initiative in order to give these 200 homeless children the education they deserve.

With these two entrepreneurial companies partnering up and using their strengths to make this project successful, there is no doubt they will make a difference in the lives of the 200 homeless children they aim to help.

First Early Childhood Accelerator Cohort

 Unreasonable Institute

New Orleans
, Louisiana – May 17, 2016 – Smart Coos was chosen to be a part of the Unreasonable Institute’s first Early Childhood Accelerator Cohort. The goal of the Early Childhood Accelerator is to use the assets of the Unreasonable Institute to get entrepreneurs the training, mentorship and capital they need to accelerate their venture and positively impact at least 1,000,000 children, ages 0 to 5, in low-income districts. The Unreasonable Institute believes that there is a disparity in the amount of access low-income children and families have to education, healthcare and relevant information. They believe that if this gap between the information low-income children have access to in comparison to and middle and high-income children can be closed, it will allow the children of low-income families to finally be able to end the cycle of poverty. Their target demographic is low-income children ages 0 to 5 because studies have shown that positive impact made at a young age will have lasting effects on a child’s development and their future opportunities.

The program will be in person from July 19th through the 24th of this year, but the program will provide support for its chosen entrepreneurial cohort before and after these dates as well.  The cohort will also have access to a 250 plus funder network to help the cohort overcome the hurdles they will encounter during their ventures. Like Smart Coos, the Unreasonable Institute believes that all children should have equal access to education and the relevant information that will help open doors for them in the future. They also recognize the importance of impacting a child’s life as early as possible in order for that child’s future to have the best outcome.

Smart Coos is excited to be a part of the first Early Childhood Accelerator cohort, and is ready to take this opportunity to reach more disadvantaged children and positively impact their futures.

Smart Coos Offers Live Online 8-Week Language Classes

Sign Language, Mandarin, French? Get your child started now.

November 30, 2015 – Smart Coos has begun offering 8-week language lesson packages. In addition to the standard Smart Coos subscription services, children can now be enrolled in 8-week language classes, with new sessions beginning every two weeks.

Classes currently being offered are in Spanish, English, French, Mandarin Chinese and even Sign Language!

Classes are thirty minutes long, one day a week for eight weeks. They will include live story time readings, foreign language sing-alongs, and games.

“Based on the feedback from parents, kids and our own research — it was apparent that there was a high level of demand for packaged sessions,” said Smart Coos CEO Mirta Desir.  “Just like mom and dad can join local meetup groups to do activities with their young kids for a set-time frame, we offer parents and kids the opportunity to learn a second language from the comfort of their home over eight weeks. ”

One language guide teaches each 8-week session for the duration of the course, in order to establish continuity for the enrolled children and parents alike. Long-term exposure allows for a working rapport between guide and Smart Cooers, and familiarity creates a more productive learning environment for Smart Coos pupils.

Smart Coos 8-week language courses come with a number of extra perks, including text “nudges” and reminder emails, to help parents manage their families’ busy schedules and make it easier to fit Smart Coos into the daily routine.

Smart Coos also offers language session recordings, so that parent can review their child’s progress and practice with them, long after the course has finished.

Eight week Smart Coos courses start at $165.

Smart Coos makes it easy for parents and teachers to give kids the opportunity to learn a second language by providing a live-language teacher on its interactive web-based platform.

Smart Coos partners with homelessness support organization Fish With A Man

Education is the most powerful tool we have for preventing homelessness.

November 3, 2015 – Smart Coos has been reaching out to fellow socially conscious, educationally focused organizations to foster collaboration. The most recent of these collaborations is a long term partnership with the Fish With A Man organization (FWAM).

Founded in February of this year by CEO Randal Johnson, and based in southeastern Florida, FWAM is a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting the homeless and helping them become self-reliant.

FWAM focuses on providing the homeless with four principal categories of support: proper government identification, reliable transportation, education, and employment opportunities. They depend largely on community donations, government grants, and philanthropic effort for their funding ( if you’re interested in donating, follow this link: http://fishwithaman.org/w/give/re/ ).

“The values of Smart Coos and FWAM are aligned in helping people to help themselves,” said Johnson. “FWAM believes in the power of education to open doors of possibility, whether it’s for a newborn, adolescent or adult.”

Smart Coos and FWAM also believe that education is the most powerful tool we have for preventing homelessness. That’s why FWAM will be offering children in South Florida  free Smart Coos language packages for a month.  Smart Coos offers a series of interactive, digital language learning tools and live language lessons with native speaking tutors to children of all ages.

Smart Coos Offers 1,000 New Jersey Public School Students Free Mandarin Chinese and Spanish Classes for the Fall Semester

Fast-growing edtech startup  with a conscience offers an elite platform to New Jersey Public School students in grades Pre-K to 10th grade at no cost

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – September 19, 2015 – Smart Coos, the fast-growing edtech startup that promotes language learning from birth, announced today that it is offering free Mandarin Chinese and Spanish classes for the fall semester to the first 1,000 students who sign up at www.smartcoos.com.

On September 15th, it came to the attention of Mirta Desir that a Mandarin Chinese program was cut from a New Jersey public school, which existed for several years, was abruptly terminated.

As a result, Smart Coos is offering students the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese and Spanish on its platform through live language sessions with a native speaker and text nudges. Children have the opportunity to learn the foreign language of their choice, while reinforcing their native language.

“What a child learns in school when they are young has a tremendous impact on a child’s access to opportunity, be it college, a career, or life in general,” said Desir. “The fact that all students do not have a robust curriculum, such as one that contains early secondary-language exposure beginning in  pre-kindergarten, causes children to miss an opportunity to receive the tools for the best possible future. Bright futures begin now.  If Smart Coos can help meet its social responsibility by offering young students in New Jersey public schools exposure to a foreign language today, it’s a good start.”

Parents can sign up for live Mandarin Chinese or Spanish language sessions on the Smart Coos’ website ( www.smartcoos.com ).

New Jersey Public School administrators and teachers can register students for the semester by contacting Smart Coos at the information below.

Could your child be multilingual before kindergarten? Smart Coos pitches product at The Big Break Power Pitch presented by ESSENCE Festival® presented by Coca-Cola®.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – June 5, 2015 – Studies show that the earlier children are introduced to a second language, the better chance they have to fully acquire that language along with performing better in school.

Through language sessions, group or individual and text nudges, children are able to learn nonnative languages, along with reinforcing their native language.

Smart Coos, along with three other companies, will pitch in The Big Break Power Pitch on Friday, July 3rd at 1:30pm at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on the Centerstage at the the 2015 ESSENCE Festival® presented by Coca-Cola®. “The first few years of a child’s life have a tremendous impact on where each child ends up in school, career, and life in general,” said Mirta Desir, CEO and founder of Smart Coos. “With Smart Coos quick growth since launch, it is clear that parents were looking for and have found a solution for not only teaching their children a foreign language from birth but also supporting them in maintaining the 30,000 words a day with their children in the native language. The fact that Essence and PowerMoves.NOLA has given Smart Coos the opportunity to present this unique and powerful service at the Essence Festival is humbling and respectable.”

Smart Coos Launches a Summer Learning Loss Program

NEW ORLEANS, LA – May 21, 2015 – Smart Coos, the world’s first interactive language learning platform for children, newborns to age 8, has launched a summer initiative program to combat the learning loss that traditionally occurs during the summer among students. Our goal is to keep your students minds engaged and active throughout the summer to diminish the workload your teachers will have to do when the students return from break.

Each student can go to SmartCoos.com and receive free sessions beginning May 25 – August 20th. For the students to receive the language sessions for free their parents must sign up with the school/organization’s special code. If you want your school or organization to sign up, please contact Harold Jean-Louis at harold@smartcoos.com.

Join the Smart Coos Summer Learning Loss Initiative Program (SLLIP) and allow us to bring your students back to you in good mental health.
